Job Opportunity – Junior Veterinarian with special interest in cardiac surgery

Medanex Clinic has recently entered into a strategic partnership with Xeltis, a Swiss clinical-stage medical device company pioneering a restorative approach in heart valve therapy ( ). To support Xeltis’ ambitious goals, Medanex has been chosen as preclinical partner to perform an important part of its large-animal-studies for the coming 3 years. The current focus of the program is on mitral valve implantations in a sheep model.

We seek:

A veterinarian who is eager to step into the blended world of animal research for human applications, willing to engage in a learning pathway. A strong interest in cardiology and cardiac surgery is imperative but previous experience is not mandatory.

Your responsibilities will be:

  • Assist the cardiac surgeon with all surgeries (standard 4 open-heart surgeries per week in sheep)
  • Provide pre- and postoperative care of these animals
  • Participate in the follow-up program of the animals (echocardiography, clinical follow-up, angiography, pressure measurements,…)
  • Data management and analysis under supervision of the Study Director and involved Scientists
  • Participation in the rotation scheme of evening- and weekend duties (only programmed work, no emergencies) together with 2 other veterinarians, 3 biotechnicians and 3 animal caretakers
  • Active participation in Test Facility Meetings


  • You hold a Veterinary Degree with a key interest in anesthesia and surgery, and preferably hold a certificate in laboratory animal science (e.g. FELASA) or are willing to obtain it.
  • Experience with Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) is an asset.
  • You are dedicated to your tasks, precise and perfectionist, eager to learn and willing to invest time in your learning process.
  • You are collaborative and respectful towards colleagues in any role.
  • You are communicatively skilled to interact with animal caretakers, biotechnicians, study directors and management.
  • You are proficient in English.
