Graduate Student in Veterinary Communication
Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Calgary

The Department of Production Animal Health in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Calgary, in collaboration with Ghent University, MSD Animal Health and St. Anna Advies, is seeking a graduate student (PhD) with interests in veterinary communication, dairy cattle, epidemiology and herd health.

Project description:
Dairy farmers worldwide face disease challenges that threaten animal health and welfare and can have a substantial economic impact on individual farms, as well as on the dairy industry. Veterinarians are considered one of the most important influences on farm management and are in an ideal position to motivate farmers to use best farming practices. There is much evidence that improving clinical communication in specific ways results in more effective consultations, improved adherence, greater satisfaction for practitioner and client or patient and improved health outcomes. We aim to identify communication characteristics specific to veterinarian-farmer interactions and to determine effects of communication training on various outcomes (e.g. farmer satisfaction and herd health outcomes). We are currently seeking a PhD student who will:

  • Collect data on dairy farms, e.g. using farm records, questionnaires and interviews;
  • Assess veterinary communication in role-play scenarios and on farms; and
  • Evaluate effects of communication training on veterinary communication skills and herd health.

What are we looking for:
Applicants with a DVM degree or MSc in a related field, e.g. Animal Science or Communication. The preferred candidates must be a good team player. Ability to work independently with good communication (oral and written) skills in English is needed. Basic knowledge of epidemiology is considered an asset. Proficiency in Dutch is also considered an asset. The candidate will be based in Calgary (Canada) but will have to travel regularly to the United Kingdom and Belgium, as portions of the research project will be performed in those countries. The estimated time spent in Calgary is 10 to 11 months per year, with the remainder spent abroad.

UCVM is a young and dynamic veterinary faculty in Western Canada that is committed to strengthen connections among animal health, public health and the environment.
